OUR STORY

Black vacuum cleaner on a brown rug

It’s a good idea to regularly vacuum your rug.
Over time, sand & debris can work through the pile of a rug and act as an abrasive on the knots which can result in shedding of the pile. Vacuum with the suction function or attachment only. Never use a beater brush vacuum, especially if your rug has long fringe.

It happens to the best of us
… the dreaded spill.

Should you find yourself in a situation where food or liquids have spilled on your rug, please consider the following steps:

(1) First, blot any excess liquids or debris. (2) Use club soda or a warm, soapy water and a clean white towel to remove the remainder.
(3) Please do not use a cleaning agent. Depending on the chemical make-up, cleaning products can irrevocably damage your rug / carpet by interacting with & altering dyes.
(4) Your rug should be completely dry before placement back on the floor.
(5) Placing a damp rug on the floor could result in mold & mildew issues.

Red Wine

The last thing any of us want is a permanent reminder of an accidental spill. The tannins in red wine make it imperative that quick-action is taken in order to prevent staining.

Should you find yourself in this situation, it’s best to blot with a clean towel, soak affected area with club soda, blot, & repeat.
This process can be slow & it may take up to 20 passes. If this does not work, please create a mound of table salt over the stain & call us so that we may facilitate a professional cleaning. Please scrub with the direction of the nap.

Red Dye

This is one of the more challenging stains to remove from a rug, especially if it is light in color. That being said, it is possible to remove, especially if quick-steps are taken initially.
The approach is the same as with red wine, except do not use salt. Blot the stained area, soak with club soda, & repeat as many times as necessary. Please scrub with the direction of the nap.

Animal Urine

Urine can result in irreversible damage to your rug, especially if it’s handmade. If allowed to remain in the rug, the urine can destabilize dyes, cause color run, dry-rot, and other unsightly damage.
Whenever a pet accident does occur, it’s best to flush the area with club soda or fresh water. This can be done by elevating the soiled areas over a container or bucket while flushing out the contaminated area(s).

A towel or mild detergent may be used in these situations, but beware of oxidized bleach & other caustic additives. Please make sure the piece is completely dry before placing back onto the floor.

If long-term urine staining is discovered, please contact us so that we may put you in contact with a professional cleaner.

Professional Cleaning

When should you have your rug professionally cleaned? Well, that’s going to depend on a few things, like: how much you value your rug, its construction, traffic patterns, family-size, etc. In our experience, it’s time to call the cleaner when your rug is looking “tired”. This usually happens after a few years of heavy traffic. You may notice some darker “trails” in your rug. That’s a good indication that it’s time for a good cleaning.

Cutting rug padding

Padding

It’s wise to pair your lovely rug with a premium pad. In addition to keeping the rug in place, a good pad will prevent sand, dirt, debris, from working between the back of your rug & your floor, which results in eroding the knots over time. There’s a few different types of padding. We’ll gladly help you find the appropriate padding for your rug.

Moth Damage

Damage from Moth larvae can be frustrating, expensive, & difficult to rectify. These damaged areas will usually occur on the dark, untouched, & dusty portions of rug, e.g. under a sofa, behind a chair, under a table, etc. The number one best way to prevent this is to vacuum ALL of your rug regularly. Otherwise, there’s a few long-term treatments which involve Zinc or Magnesium Florosilicate. These preventive measures should last until the rug is cleaned again.

Rotation

It’s a good idea to periodically rotate your rug 180º to prevent traffic patterns and even sun fading.

UV Light

Prolonged exposure to UV light, especially in the Sunshine State, will result in an altering of pile color. Most modern windows eliminate this problem, but a thermal / UV barrier can be applied to windows to prevent this issue entirely.
